Born in Lakenheath (Mildenhall Q3-1888 4A:693), son of William and Maria RUTTERFORD (née COLEMAN).
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Anchor Lane, Lakenheath with his grandparents Samuel COLEMAN [75] born Lakenheath, and Lucy [74] born Ashfield; his parents William RUTTERFORD [45] an invalid born Lakenheath and Maria [35] born Lakenheath; Noah COLEMAN [8] (recorded as grandson of Samuel and born in Lakenheath) His father died in 1895 (Mildenhall Q3-1895 4A:467) and his mother then married Isaac TERRINGTON in Q1-1896. Isaac had been married to Susan MACKENDER (Mildenhall Q3-1880 4a:837) and she died in 1888. 1901 census...It does seem here as if two households have entered Jabez as present for the census. Aged 13 he was staying at High Street, Lakenheath with his widowed grandmother Lucy COLEMAN [83] born Badwell Ash. He does also appear to be the 12 yrs old Jabez at High Street, Lakenheath with his mother and his stepfather Isaac TERRINGTON, Isaac's daughter Emma [18] and Jabez's sister Minnie [5]. 1911 census...Aged 22, a farm labourer, he was still at Farrow's Yard, Lakenheath with his stepfather and mother and sister Minnie He married Florence Matilda HODGE (Newmarket Q4-1913 3b:1183). Around the time of his death his wife and son, George William (1914) were living in Wisbech at 11 Osborne Road. |

He enlisted in Wisbech. The 7th Suffolk moved up to Peizières, on the NE edge of Épehy. From there they were part of the attack launched on 20th November on the Hindenburg Line. The war diary entry is brief- Battalion attacked 6:20 am in conjunction with tanks. Attack successful. Casualties light. 2 officers wounded." CWGC record 10 men killed, none with an identified grave. Jabez and his 9 chums, including Claude Cobbold from West Row, are named on the Cambrai Memorial. The Bury Free Press of 22nd December 1917 report:- LAKENHEATH MAN REPORTED WOUNDED - BUT FEARED TO BE MISSING Anxiety is felt in regards to Prvt Jabez William Rutterford, 7th Suffolk Regiment who is reported to have been wounded on November 20th. His wife, Mrs. Rutterford, 14 Banister Row, Wisbech has been officially notified, but as no further communication has been received it is feared he is missing.He is the second son of Mrs Isaac Terrington, Farrow's Yard, Lakenheath, and joined the Army 2 1/2 years ago. He was first sent to Salonica where he contracted fever and was then sent to Malta and afterwards returned to England. On his recovery he was again sent to France. Either his wife or mother will be grateful for any news concerning him,. as he was in the habit of writing to both weekly. The Bury Free Press of 26th October 1918 confirmed that he was been presumed killed on or about 29th November 1917. |
